The Enyaq took home the 2022 Car of the Year award, giving an indication of just how good it is. This is Skoda’s first electric car and, as expected, the reliable Czech brand has delivered a great all-round package with great performance, great comfort and a generous range of 339 kilometers. It’s built for comfort rather than speed, though – and for that reason, we’d say you’ll be clear on the vRS’s sporting variety. In the real world, they are not faster or more interesting than the standard Enyaq. Better to stick with the two-wheel drive model and drop your cash on Skoda’s massive 77kWh battery. The BMW iX is a very affordable electric SUV, and its styling isn’t for everyone – but we think it’s great value for money for the range of capabilities it offers. It features a lightweight carbonfibre structure, large batteries for up to 380 miles of driving range – more than any other electric SUV – and a driving experience that belies its size and shape. That the iX is the safest car tested by Euro NCAP in 2021 also speaks volumes for its impressive capabilities. Other cars in this range (such as the Enyaq) offer more storage space than the iX, but the BMW hits back with its impressive infotainment and driver assistance technology suite. The Tesla Model Y is a middle ground between the Tesla Model 3 and the Model X. It is perfect for those who want a little space for their families but are constrained by the size of the Model X. The technology is great, too. Everything is controlled by a large 15.4-inch infotainment screen that looks and works quickly. Although we’ll admit it’s a little scary for technophobes. We think it’s a more polished product than the Tesla Model X, as it’s built on the same platform as the new Model 3. up to 319 miles per charge from battery packs. Once you understand the steep initial price, the BMW iX3 is a great electric SUV. It handles quickly, is quick in a straight line and is efficient, offering a real-world range of around 230 miles. That’s pretty good considering the official range is quoted as 285 miles. Although it manages to stay sharp in corners, the iX3 is also comfortable and refined. The ride is a little on the side, but it’s well cushioned – and sits well on the road, making the ride even more comfortable. Nissan has a lot of experience in making electric cars. The Nissan Leaf was one of the first practical EVs – and the Ariya carries the same torch as well. Nissan says it can drive up to 329 miles between charges, putting it on par with rivals from Kia, Volkswagen and Skoda. It’s also functional, with a clean minimalist interior, plenty of storage space and a large 466-litre boot. We also like the Ariya’s technology – it has a fast 12.3-inch screen that’s easy to use, if it fails. In fact, the lack of character is Ariya’s biggest problem. Volkswagen has made a good effort in combining the futurism of an electric vehicle with everyday practicality with the ID.4. While the touchscreen interior controls can take a little getting used to, there’s plenty of space inside and the build quality is as good as you’d expect from a VW Tiguan or Golf. It does a great job of providing simple, spacious family transportation, as we found in our long-term test of the ID.4. We recommend opting for the larger 77kWh battery, as it will give you a real-world range of between 250 and 300 miles (depending on weather and driving style). But we don’t recommend bothering with the GTX sports variant – the marginal gains you get in performance aren’t worth the sacrifices you make in high-end driving range.
